Woe is me, Sweet Sully here, the newest Paw Up! Lab! Two weeks ago I was busy running around with my best friend and we were both hit by a car, I was injured pretty badly, my friend didn't make it. We were both out there for a couple of days before a kind Animal Control Officer heard what happened to us and rushed out and brought me to the shelter, boy was I glad to see her. I quickly won everyone over, showing them all what a sweet and loving boy I am while being in an incredible amount of pain. Even though my injuries are serious, the shelter didn’t have the heart to euthanize me.

I am told I have a dislocated right hip with a femoral neck fracture and my left leg has a fractured femur at the mid-shaft. I will need to have FHO surgery on my hip and plates and pins put into my other leg to stabilize it so the break will heal okay and be strong and I can have a long happy life.

Sounds pretty complicated to me but they say I’ll be as good as new after I recover from my two surgeries. This nice rescue lady from Labradors and Friends came to visit me and knew she couldn’t just leave me there. These surgeries are going to cost a pretty penny. Can you help them with a donation towards my care? Anything at all would be great and its 100% tax deductible. Stay tuned for updates about my progress and some new photos.

Labbie hugs & slobbery kisses, Sully

Lilly's Story

Lilly

My name is Lilly, a lovely chocolate lady that was left at the shelter by my beloved family due to illness. I was so sad to lose my family, but then rescue saved me and gave me a wonderful foster home. Well, now I’ve been diagnosed with my own illness – Squamous Cell Carcinoma – cancerous tumors. I’m not sure what that means because I love life and have a wag and smile for everyone I meet. But they tell me its serious stuff.
I’ve already had surgery to have some tumors removed. The folks at Labradors and Friends are scurrying to raise the funds to cover my medical bills. So, in the Spirit of the Season, I’d sure appreciate your help. Any small amount you can donate will contribute to the gift of life that I’ve been given…Happy Holidays to you all.

The Holiday spirit is upon us. Any donation you can give to help the Labs would be a blessing

Arcy' Story

Arcy

I’m Arcy, only a year old and almost lost my life. Abandoned at a high kill shelter in Los Angeles, I waited patiently for my family to find me. When they didn’t come, I thought my young life was about to end. . I am a good girl and just love life. I’ll sit if you ask me and love a good game of fetch. Besides tennis balls, I love to cuddle up and be your gentle sweetheart. I also get on great with other dogs!

I have this condition called “Entropion”, something I was born with. It involves the turning in of the edges of the eyelid so that the lashes rub against the eye surface. Without surgery to correct the problem, decreased vision may occur if the cornea is damaged. The good news is that with early correction, my vision will be normal. Rescue will be arranging my surgery as soon as they can raise the funds.

Please watch this site for updates. I am available for foster or adoption while I’m waiting. I’d much rather recuperate on a nice comfy doggie bed. Might you help??

The Holiday spirit is upon us. Any donation you can give would be a gift

Atticus' Story

Atticus

I’m Atticus a lovely 5 year old boy. Oh dear! What was my family thinking! As a young pup, I had a condition called Entropian. Just an inverted eyelid that needed a simple surgical procedure to fix. Problem is, if it doesn’t get corrected, major eye damage can occur. And that is just what happened. Now I have an Ulcerated Cornea that is painful and requires more extensive, and expensive surgery to save my eye.

To make matters worse, my family dumped me at a shelter. Why do people do that to their beloved canine family members? I was so loyal and loving and was so sad and scared being left in that scary place. Fortunately, the angels at Labradors and Friends came and got me and promised they will raise the money for my surgery. I am such a goofy, lovable boy, friendly and playful with people and other dogs, just waiting for a new family to call my own.

I would sure appreciate it if you could help my journey by donating any funds you might be able to afford. After my eye surgery, I’ll be looking for a new family to start life anew! Watch this page for my progress!

Might you spare some funds to help with my medical care? I sure would be grateful for any donation you can give.

Gracie's Story

GracieGracie

I’m Gracie, a 5 year old beauty that nearly lost her life after being brutally attacked at a shelter by my kennel mate. Saved in the nick of time by the shelter staff, they scrambled to find a rescue to help me. My fate was to be euthanized due to the nature of my injuries.

When Labradors and Friends heard my story, they put the calls out far and wide to save me. You see, I was in a shelter 200 miles away! But with their love and dedication, a rescue team was formed.
I was taken to the vet immediately for treatment. The bite wounds were deep and infected, so as you can see, I have these silly things sticking out of me to drain the infection. And I do apologize for the shaved ear, but I'm lucky to still have an ear!

I'm resting comfortably and will update my kind viewers on my progress.

Might you spare some funds to help with my medical care? I sure would be grateful for any donation you can give.

September 19, 2009. I arrived safely all the way from Kern County. As you can see, I'm still quite a sight from the horrible attack at the shelter. But I am healing and wearing a nice t-shirt so my wounds stay clean. And check it out! I got my first bath and I'm looking good! You can see my beauty shining through. Please check back and watch my miracle continue.

Cash's Story

Cash

I’m Cash, a 5 year old boy that met with a moving vehicle on the streets of Los Angeles. Taken to the shelter, the vet determined I have a dislocated hip and would need FHO surgery. I waited for over a month in severe pain while my family decided if they wanted to pay for my surgery or just let the shelter euthanize me. Fortunately, the vet kept me as comfortable as possible on pain medicine while my fate was decided.
I guess my family couldn’t afford to save me, so they relinquished me to the shelter. The staff immediately called Labradors and Friends and asked if they would take me into rescue. I was a shelter favorite and everyone cheered when rescue said they would help me. I wagged my tail in unison as I was so grateful I didn’t have to die just because I got hit by a car. I am a gentle and sweet boy, so full of life and love. I am now at the vet awaiting surgery. Watch my spot here for updates.

Might you find it in your heart to help rescue pay for my surgery and medical care? I sure would be grateful for any donation you can give.

Kenyon's Story

Kenyon

I’m Kenyon a 5 year old boy whose only flaw in life was my existence. You see, life was grand in my home until these other 2 dogs moved in. They didn’t like me and I was violently attacked resulting in multiple wounds and serious injuries. I guess you could say I’m lucky to be alive!
In tremendous pain, my owners took me to the vet and left me there. Guess they no longer wanted me. I required stitches and drains to keep my bite wounds from getting infected. The vet staff fell in love with me and told me what a good boy I am. They contacted Labradors and Friends and asked if they would take care of me. I have the sweetest disposition, love other dogs and children. I am hoping to put all this behind me and to find a new home to keep me safe from harm. I’m still at the vet getting much TLC, but I am now ready to move into nice comfy home so I can fully recover.
If you can spare some change to help with my medical bills, I would be most grateful

Byron's Story

Byron

So as I was saying on the Home Page, I’m Byron, who almost became a shelter casualty were it not for the team effort of the folks at the vet and Labradors and Friends. The shelter sent me to the vet to be euthanized. My only fault was having Demodex mange, a skin condition that puppies can be born with, that is non-contagious and so treatable. Well, the veterinary staff fell madly in love with me and contacted Labrador and Friends Rescue and they made a pact to save me.
I am being treated with Mitaban dips and oral Ivermectin. Don’t ask me what that is, but it is working! My skin is clearing and I am starting to look like a real dog now! Soon, my coat will be lush and gorgeous to match my insides. They tell me I am the sweetest, most affectionate puppy, who loves everyone and every dog I meet. Happy, waggy tailed me is just loving life and I am ever so grateful for the chance to live I’ve been given.

If you’d like to be part of my transformation and recovery, won’t you please make a small donation for my medication and care?

Royal's Story

Royal

I'm Royal, a gorgeous 1-2 year old boy who loves life. Sadly, I wound up at a shelter after being hit by a car.
In tremendous pain, the shelter staff fell in love with my large soulful eyes, constant wagging tail, and sweet soft kisses. Rescue came for me as soon as I was available. I was rushed to the vet for immediate care. We are praying for a miracle as my diagnosis unfolds. So far, I have a dislocated hip, some abrasions and infection and am on pain medicine to ease my suffering. With possible spinal issues, I need all your prayers and good thoughts that all my woes are fixable and that I am headed to a full recovery.

Update: 8-4-09 I am being treated with steroids and antibiotics, and things are lookin' good! Swelling is down, and I am starting to walk on my own. In foster care now, I am so much more hopeful. Foster mom still has to help me up, but each day I get stronger. I am still in a great deal of pain when I move, but mom says I'm a such a trooper! As soon as I am medically cleared, I will need hip surgery so I don't have to hurt anymore. Please watch for more updates as my miracle unfolds.

Update 8-11-09. Note from my foster mom: "Our sweet boy Royal is doing amazing! He is scheduled for his FHO surgery to repair his hip on Friday. He is walking and wanting to play so bad, but his hip is unstable and it does hurt him. This time next week he will be feeling much better and be on the road to a complete recovery!"

Update: 8-14-09 Today's the big day! I had my FHO surgery today to repair my hip. It went really well and I am in recovery waiting for foster mom to pick me up. Everyone at the Vet's office was commenting on what a sweet boy I am! The next week will be tough as I need to be quiet and rest and let the joint heal. But in no time I will be running around pain free!

Update 8-27-09 Foster mom says I'm doing great! My sutures come out this weekend, and I am trying to bounce around, going on longer walks now and and really starting to use my leg. I've put on some much needed weight too. As I grow stronger, I hope to be looking for a permanent home real soon!
If you can find it in your heart to donate some funds for my medical care and hip surgery, I would be ever so grateful. Please keep me in your thoughts

Charlie's Story

Charlie

Only 6 months old and running scared through the busy streets of L.A. Being inexperienced in City life, Charlie ran into the road and was hit by an oncoming car.

Lucky to be alive, Charlie suffered a fractured pelvis and rear leg socket that will require surgery. Charlie was taken to a shelter and kept in the isolation unit. As a shelter favorite, his story soon spread amongst the rescue community and he became an Internet hero where Labradors and Friends quickly arranged his rescue and transport.

In spite of his pain, Charlie is a typical fun loving puppy, full of life and hope. He will crawl onto your shoulder, into your lap and into your heart. After his surgery, Charlie will require a loving and patient home, dedicated to his aftercare.

Now that Charlie is safe in our rescue, any contribution to his surgery and recovery would be a blessing.

Isabel's Story

Isabel

Over the weekend, we were altered to a sweet girl at North County Humane that really needed our help and today we sprung our newest chocolate girl, Isabel!

Isabel is a 4 year old, AKC purebred chocolate girl. She has a wonderful temperament, but unfortunately, she has a very sad story. Isabel was purchased in May by a woman who intended to breed her. When the woman took her to the vet to clear her hips and elbows for breeding, she found out that Isabel has bi-lateral elbow dysplasia and a torn cruciate ligament. The woman then gave Isabel away at a garage sale. Then, last week, Isabel was found abandoned at a warehouse in Oceanside.

Despite this awful start in life, Isabel is your typical happy-go-lucky labrador! The shelter was able to contact the previous owner and we have found out that Isabel is housebroken and was living with teenagers and lots of other dogs without any problems. It also appears Isabel is fine with feline friends, as well.

Isabel had quickly become a shelter favorite and was hanging out in the shelter office with the staff. She is incredibly well-mannered and just loves everyone. She loves to retrieve and have toys in her mouth. Isabel will make a wonderful companion to a very lucky family!

Isabel is being examined tomorrow to find out whether or not we can repair her cruciate ligament. We will update you all as we learn more about Isabel's medical needs. Paws crossed for Isabel!

Nanny's Story

Nanny

Hi everybody! I'm Nanny, a lovely purebred girl and here is my story...

Being the darling 7 year old girl that I am, I was very sad to be left behind by a family that I loved at a high kill shelter. I'm temporarily blind and was so scared in that cold, unfamiliar place. Lucky for me, I touched the nice rescue peoples hearts and was whisked away from that dark, scary environment. Now, I am safe in a foster home, doing “happy lab" dances! My foster mom tells me what a special girl I am. She whispers sweet nothings in my ear and I smile like a puppy. While I await cataract surgery so I can see again, I get along quite well being blind and navigate everything like a pro. I definitely needed a paw up! to be in the happy place I am today. Can you please help me and this nice rescue fund my eye surgery so that I can not only enjoy my new life, but see it and the people that now love and care for me?

Very happy labbie hugs,
Nanny

Lily's Story

Lily

Hi, I'm Lily and this is my story...

I was found wandering the streets of Los Angeles not too long ago, cold, scared and in pain. I didn't know what lay ahead of me, but just hoped that my life was going to take a turn for the better. And then it did!! This nice rescue took me in and got me all fixed up. Turns out, I was hurting because I suffered a fractured pelvis, and underwent surgery this week to help stabilize my pelvis and right rear leg. I feel better already, and will be quietly recuperating while my body heals. Now, I'm just looking for a foster home where I can get all better and then I'll be looking for a family to call my own. I just can't wait to be loved...if I sound like I could be the girl for you, just ask for Lily!

Hugs and Kisses,
Sweet Lily

Anna's Story

anna

anna

Hi, sweet and ever so gentle Anna here! I'm so happy now in my loving foster home!

I am shy at first, but that is because my first 10 months of life have been harder than I ever imagined. I was hit by a car about 3 weeks before finally reaching safety in rescue. My left front elbow was dislocated and I had bruises and cuts on my back legs, but I didn't give up. I tried to survive on my own, until I ended up in the shelter, and luckily tore at the heartstrings of the rescue lady, who promised me that I would have a good life someday. I've been seen by a number of veterinary specialists, and my prognosis was that my injured leg needed to be amputated. Now that it's out of my way and I'm healing like a dream, I'm doing just fine as a 3 legged girl. I'm happy now, and that's really all that matters to me!! With one blue eye and one brown, and three legs...I actually like to stand out a little bit! If you have it in your heart to either donate towards my surgery, open your home to foster me as I recover or think I could be the forever girl for you, just ask for Anna.

Love and gentle kisses,
Anna

Chip's Story

Chip

Hi...I'm the new boy Chip!

For being such a young guy (I'm about a year old,) I've experienced a pretty rough existence up until now, but that hasn't hurt my spirit! I'm SO sweet and gentle...a complete doll! I am emaciated, weighing in at 54 lbs with a bone structure made for about an 80 lb dog. I was most likely hit by a car and ended up being picked up by Animal Control. I had to sit in the shelter for a week with a dislocated, broken bone in my rear leg, hoping that someone would come to claim me. Nobody did, until rescue showed up with the opening bell the morning I was available to the public!

My leg has been excrutiatingly painful, because it's also an open wound where the break is. I've been such a brave boy though. Now, the nice rescue people are working on all the options for me, but no matter what I will need surgery and I know the rescue needs donations to help pay for this, (even though I'm not supposed to worry about it.) After my surgery, I'll be going into a foster home where I can't wait to give lots of sweet kisses and finally be given the TLC I know I deserve. Please help me in anyway you can. I'll be looking for my forever home soon too!

I promise I will touch your heart,
Chip
